The legendary Pixies, whose influence spans five decades and has shaped the sound of artists like Nirvana, Radiohead, Weezer, Smashing Pumpkins, Arcade Fire, Pavement, PJ Harvey, and Canada’s own Treble Charger, delivered a blistering and unforgettable performance at Bluesfest on Saturday, July 12. Their set raised the bar for all acts that will follow. Opening with a powerful rendition of “Gouge Away,” the band launched into a dynamic set that fused raw energy with haunting beauty. A highlight of the night, and a personal favourite, was their moving cover of Neil Young’s Winterlong, elevated by the contrasting vocals of Black Francis and Emma Richardson, who replaced Paz Lenchantin and before her the legendary Kim Deal. “Monkey Gone to Heaven” thundered with urgency, while “Where Is My Mind?” and “Debaser” sent waves through the crowd. They closed with a stunning performance of “Motorway to Roswell.” It was only regrettable that they did not perform their catchy and compact gem “Allison,” a fan favourite that often adds a punch of brevity and charm to their live sets. As expected, the Pixies delivered a memorable experience, well worth every dollar.
