On October 8, 2023, Burt Young, aka “Uncle Paulie,” died at the age of 83. He was a former Marine and professional boxer who famously portrayed Paulie opposite Sylvester Stallone in six Rocky films and was nominated for an Academy Award for his supporting role in the 1976 original. The character of Paulie is one of the most iconic in the history of boxing movies.
Lying about his age, he entered the US Marine Corps at the age of 16 and served from 1957 to 1959. In the boxing world, under three pseudonyms, he amassed an impressive 17-0 as a professional. Sylvester Stallone always used professional boxers and athletes in the Rocky movies; Burt was no exception.
He was featured in over 160 movies and TV appearances, including Rocky I to VI, Back to School, Amityville II, and many others.
I bet he stared death in the eyes, saying, “I don’t sweat you!” RIP, Uncle Paulie.
